N.R. Packaging Thailand boosts sustainability and efficiency with BOBST NOVALAM S 550 solventless laminator

March 18, 2026 by ThaiPackMagazine

Operating the BOBST NOVALAM S 550 solventless laminator

N.R. Packaging, one of Thailand’s most established and vertically integrated packaging providers, has taken a major step forward in its sustainability journey by investing in the BOBST NOVALAM S 550 solventless laminator. The machine has enabled the company to reduce waste, accelerate production, and deliver recyclable packaging solutions that meet the growing environmental demands of global brand owners.

Introduction

N.R. Packaging Co., Ltd. is a household name in Thailand’s packaging sector. Part of the diversified N.R. Group, the company has evolved from supplying pharmaceutical machinery into a comprehensive packaging solutions provider covering flexible laminates, rigid plastics, aluminum packaging, and OEM services. Today, it operates nine manufacturing facilities, employs over 800 people, and manages its entire packaging process in-house, from design to delivery.

This vertical integration has always given N.R. Packaging an edge in quality, lead times, and innovation. Yet the fast-moving packaging market in Thailand and across Southeast Asia is changing. Customers are demanding stricter compliance with sustainability standards and shorter turnaround times with no compromises in quality or consistency. In response, N.R. Packaging identified the need to modernize its lamination technology and found the ideal solution in the BOBST NOVALAM S 550 solventless laminator.

The challenge

The flexible packaging industry in Thailand is facing two key challenges. One is that brand owners are seeking packaging that complies with global sustainability commitments and shifting consumer expectations. The other is that converters are facing rising demand for short-run orders and quicker lead times, without compromising on consistency or quality.

For N.R. Packaging, these pressures were especially acute. While its traditional solvent-based lamination lines had served the company well, they also came with limitations. Achieving consistency in production runs required skilled operator intervention and adjustments, which added pressure to the workforce. Solvent use also generated VOC emissions and increased energy requirements, preventing the process from being perfectly aligned with the company’s own sustainability mission.

Pongthorn Sakulsirirat, General Manager at N.R. Packaging

As Pongthorn Sakulsirirat, General Manager at N.R. Packaging, explained, “Before BOBST, lamination was often a trial-and-error process. It was difficult to balance consistency, sustainability, and efficiency across such a wide range of substrates.”

To continue delivering for customers and to maintain its leadership in the Thai market, the company needed a lamination system that would provide stable, scientific precision while also reducing environmental impact.

The solution

In 2024, N.R. Packaging invested in the BOBST NOVALAM S 550 solventless laminator, a machine designed specifically to deliver high-quality lamination with minimal environmental footprint.

The NOVALAM S 550 brings together several features that directly addressed N.R. Packaging’s needs.

Its lamination parameters can be controlled and monitored with accuracy, dramatically reducing errors and minimizing waste, bringing scientific precision to every job. At the same time, it is highly versatile; it can handle PET, PE, OPP, MCPP, and aluminum substrates, enabling the company to meet diverse customer requirements ranging from simple two-layer structures to complex four-layer laminates with barrier properties.

Crucially, the NOVALAM S 550 supports N.R. Packaging’s sustainability goals. By eliminating solvents, it reduces VOC emissions, lowers energy consumption, and delivers a safe lamination process suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications.

For N.R. Packaging, the NOVALAM S 550 represented not just a technology upgrade, but a strategic step towards its vision of being Thailand’s leading sustainable packaging innovator. Features such as automatic washing and precise multi-zone temperature control remove dependence on operator trial-and-error, ensuring consistent results on every job.

“The NOVALAM S 550 has transformed our workflow into a scientific and predictable process,” GM Pongthorn noted. “It aligns perfectly with our sustainability mission and enables us to offer better solutions to our customers.”

Evaluation

The results of the investment have been immediate and measurable. Waste during production has dropped dramatically from 5% to just 0.3% per job, creating significant savings of both materials and costs. Throughput and efficiency have improved, enabling the company to take on more short-run orders, delivering them quickly without sacrificing quality.

The NOVALAM S 550 has also expanded the range of applications N.R. Packaging can offer. Whether working with straightforward PET and LLDPE combinations or more advanced multi-layer laminates with aluminum barriers, the company can now produce structures that were previously considered challenging. This has further enhanced its reputation with both local and international brand owners as a partner capable of delivering high-performance, sustainable packaging solutions.

Equally importantly, the technology has been enthusiastically received by operators on the production floor. The machine’s automation features have simplified workflows, reduced manual intervention, and increased confidence in achieving consistent, high-quality outputs every time.

Looking ahead, N.R. Packaging is already considering how the NOVALAM S 550 will support expansion into new markets such as cosmetics, beverages, and exports. By combining world-class machinery with its integrated production capabilities, the company is positioning itself to set new benchmarks in the Thai packaging industry.

“Partnerships with forward-looking companies like N.R. Packaging demonstrate how technology and sustainability go hand-in-hand,” said Mr. Pongthorn Sakulsirirat. “With the NOVALAM S 550, N.R. Packaging is now equipped to deliver world-class results for its customers, while also reducing environmental impact and driving innovation in the Thai market.”
